YouGov poll asked the British public, “Which one, if any, of the following do you think is the single biggest cause of death in men aged under 45 years old in the UK?”  in October 2015, and then later in December and compared the statistics to see if improved awareness affected their understanding suicide.
 

The survey included numerous answers of which the participants were allowed to select one answer. The options were as followed: AIDs, knife and gun crime, prostate cancer, drugs, heart disease, road accidents, alcohol poisoning, testicular cancer, obesity and other.

 

The first initial survey in October showed:

There were many elements in the research, such as regional location of participants, their position on the socioeconomic scale and their age.

  • The October results showed that only 18% of male participants believed the biggest cause of death in men aged under 45, to be suicide. 

  • The October results showed that only 21% of female participants believed the biggest cause of death in men aged under 45, to be suicide.

 

The December 2015 results showed:

  • The December results showed that 29% of male participants believed the biggest cause of death in men aged under 45, to be suicide.

It is clear that through promoting male mental health through the medium of, social media, and public campaigns, that the British public are becoming more aware of the high male suicide rates.
