76% of suicides in 2014 were male - huffington post report

Jane Powell, the director of CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) recently wrote a very interesting article for Huffington Post which detailed the full-scale of the male suicide epidemic in Britain.

She established that, men are four times more likely to commit suicide compared to their female counterparts - but why I ask?

The answer to this very important question still remains unknown. However there are various theories about why men account for more suicides per year than women, something which Jane analyses within her article...

"Men drink more, visit the doctor less, and take more fatal methods."

"We know the expectation that ‘real men should be strong, silent and in control’ is a huge barrier to men seeking help."

Issues such as austerity, poverty, money, divorce, being a bread-winner are all factors which are often discussed as being a catalyst for male suicide, but in our twenty-first century generation where equality amongst men and women is more prominent, women are facing the same issues. So the question remains, why men?

Is it biology? Is it society? Is it personal circumstances? Or is it environmental factors?

We just don't know.

I hope in my investigation to become a little clearer as to why male suicide is so prominent.
