Globally more and more people are acting on suicidal thoughts and behaviours. Suicide knows no demographic or socioeconomic bounds, as shown by the top eleven countries listed above with the worst suicide rates.

Guyana has the highest suicide rate in world – with an astonishing 44.2 of people per 100,000 taking their own lives. In comparison to South Korea, with a suicide rate of 28.9 per 100,000, there is a massive difference in the amount of people taking their own lives.

 

Guyana’s spike in suicides is related to the 'stigma against mental illness and a lack of psychiatrists means the small South American country has to work hard to protect those at risk', as stated by the Guardian.
